I've been collecting vintage, silver-plated cutlery for quite some time. Years ago, my mother made a set of place card holders for a charity table that her church group sponsored
I thought they were so cool! I began to look at cutlery in a whole new way. Whenever I'm in a thrift or charity shop, I look for vintage, silver-plated cutlery - spoons in particular.
I had already made a set of place card holders for myself, so I turned to spoons.
The vintage patina on vintage silver-plated cutlery is quite pretty in my opinion. Pretty enough to become...jewelry?
I think so. You've likely seen spoon rings made from spoon handles; why not turn the bowls into necklaces? Well, that's just what I did. I used a few from my collection to create some funky, chic pendants. You can see in the one above that I stamped the phrase "You had me at rust," a play on the famous "You had me at hello" from the film Jerry Maguire. It expresses my love for old rusty metal and mechanical thrift finds.
This "I still believe in 398.2" spoon necklace reflects my love of romantic fairy tales and pays homage to my career as a public school librarian.
Sometimes, when the right spoon comes along, I don't stamp a phrase on it. I think this lovely slotted serving spoon is quite pretty as is.
I keep the decorative tops of the spoons I use when I cut them off during pendant-making. Rather than throwing them out, I turn them into wine glass charms. They are a bit heavy, but I've yet to chip or break a glass. I have a set with the initials of my family members' names...
and another with numbers for guests.
Consider picking up a few pieces of silver-plated cutlery on your next thrift outing, and create some vintage "bling" for yourself!
