I popped over to my local charity shop looking for something to spark some creativity and give me a project to work on for a couple of days. After winding my way through the myriad of castoffs, I found a lovely little vintage coffee grinder tucked away on a shelf full of kitchen gadgets.
It appeared to be missing the bean hopper, but I figured I could make one if I planned to use it again as a coffee grinder. The grinder wheel was functional, and the grinder parts were intact. It was ticketed at a mere $2.99.
I purchased it, took it home, took it apart, and cleaned it up.
During this inspection, I realized that removing just half of the grinder could reveal an unobstructed tunnel running the length of the whole thing, from top to bottom. That’s when inspiration struck—the big “a-ha!” moment, if you will—I could turn it into a lamp! To further encourage this idea, the hole for the hopper appeared to be just the right size to accommodate lamp bulb housing!
The base was sturdy, aesthetically attractive, and had room for wiring!
The following day, I went to my local hardware store and picked up a lamp kit, a vintage-style lightbulb, a wire cage lamp shade, and some small furniture glides.
Following the manufacturer’s instructions, I wired the power cord to the lamp bulb housing unit, fed it through the hollow grinder, attached the lamp bulb housing unit, and inserted the bulb. Tiny furniture glide feet were added to the base to provide clearance for the power cord. It really was that simple!
Though I loved the look of the bare Edison-style bulb, it was best to attach a shade. I opted for a cage shade in matte black.
This little lamp fits in well wherever I set it down. It sits on our bedroom nightstand, providing a cozy golden hue and a slight aroma of ground coffee!
